Drawing on insights from social psychology, feminist theory, and critical theory, Mackenzie's work aims to learn from and center the lived realities of those navigating systemic barriers while prioritizing "studying up" by focusing on interrogating systems of power and the institutions that uphold them. Her work helps to generate insights that can inform more inclusive policies and practices, while holding organizations accountable for their role in broader social issues.
Investigates how social and material features of the workplace can shape women's menstruation experiences. My dissertation, The Bleeding Edge of Mysoginy, examines how gender-based harassment and infastructural neglect impact the degree to which menstrual symptoms interfere with daily functioning.
Examines how cultural norms and organizational systems reproduce inequality. My colleague, Dr. Katie Lawson, and I are exploring how the perceived absence of a fair and inclusive work climate leads to greater work-life conflict among computer science faculty.
Stigma & Social Identities
Focuses on how stigma operates as a mechanism of exclusion for individuals in stigmatized occupations or with stigmatized identities. I am leading an ongoing qualitative study of abortion clinic workes to understand how abortion-related stigma impacts their daily work experiences.
